FAQ
Water softener sizing calculator FAQ
Use these answers to sanity-check the grain capacity before moving back to installed cost and system comparison.
How is water softener capacity calculated?+
Daily grains are estimated by multiplying people, gallons per person per day, and hardness in grains per gallon. The result is multiplied by the desired regeneration interval and a safety factor, then rounded to a standard grain size.
Is a larger softener always better?+
Not always. Oversizing can waste money and may regenerate less efficiently. The goal is enough capacity for the household and hardness level without buying a system far beyond the daily grain load.
When should I get a water test before sizing?+
Use a current test when hardness is unknown, the home is on a well, there are iron stains, or past equipment failed early. Iron, manganese, and sediment can change the system design.
